The U-3-b, 4-8-4 Confederations were the flagship all-purpose locomotives of the Grand Trunk Western. A total of 25 were built in 1942 and numbered 6312-6336. These high-performing locomotives were ideal for both passenger and freight trains, capable of speeds exceeding 90mph and 70mph respectively. Equipped with a (4) wheel trailing truck, (8) 73" drivers, Walschaerts valve gear, and a 250psi boiler pressure, these locomotives were highly favored by their crews. They also featured roller bearings on most axles, Boxpok drivers, Nicholson thermic syphons, and an Elesco exhaust steam injector. The U3b's were known for their durability, running up to 250,000 miles without needing major repairs. The Grand Trunk Western continued to use them until the end of the steam era. Two of these locomotives have found their way into preservation!
